COME O SPIRIT

PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT 1

Come, Holy Spirit, Creator of all things;

Come, visit our hearts with your power.

Fill with grace, friendly Guest,

The hearts which you have created.

You are called the Consoler,

Gift from the hand of God,

Source of life, light, love

And flame, highest good.

You are the pledge of sevenfold grace,

Finger of the Father's hand,

Promised us by him,

And you make our tongues speak the truth.

Cast light on our senses,

Pour love into our hearts.

Grant our weak bodies’ strength

That they may never grow weary of doing good.

Keep the enemy far from us,

Give us peace always,

Let us willingly follow in your footsteps

That they may be far removed from sin.

Grant that through you we may grow

In knowledge of the Father and of the Son,

And that we may ever strongly

Believe in you, the Spirit of both.

Praise and honour be forever

To the Father on the highest throne

To the risen Son of God,

To the Consoler. Amen.

Let us pray:

God our Father,

no secret is hidden from you,

for every heart is open to you and every wish is known.

Fill our hearts

with the light of your Holy Spirit

to free our thoughts from sin,

that we may perfectly love you

and fittingly praise you.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT 2

Come, Holy Spirit, Creator, come

From thy bright heavenly throne,

Come, take possession of our souls,

And make them all thy own.

Thou who art called the Paraclete,

Best gift of God above,

The living spring, the living fire,

Sweet unction and true love.

Thou who art sev'nfold in thy grace,

Finger of God's right hand;

His promise teaching little ones

To speak and understand.

O guide our minds with thy blest light,

With love our hearts inflame;

And with thy strength which ne'er decays,

Confirm our mortal frame.

Far from us drive our deadly foe;

True peace unto us bring;

And through all perils lead us safe

Beneath thy sacred wing.

Through thee may we the Father know,

Through thee th'eternal Son,

And thee the Spirit of them both,

Thrice-blessed three in one.

All glory to the Father be,

With his co-equal Son;

The same to thee, great Paraclete,

While endless ages run.

Let us pray:

Almighty God,

let the splendour of your glory shine upon us.

May Christ who is light from your light

strengthen by the illumination of the Holy Spirit,

the hearts of those who have been reborn by grace.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT 3

Come, O Creator, Spirit blest,

And in our souls take up thy rest.

Come with thy grace and heavenly aid

To fill the hearts which thou hast made.

Great Paraclete to thee we cry,

O highest gift of God most high,

O fount of life, O fire of love

And sweet anointing from above.

Thou in thy sevenfold gifts art known;

The finger of God's hand we own;

The promise of the Father thou,

Who dost the tongue with fire endow.

Our senses kindle from above,

And make our hearts overflow with love;

With patience firm and virtue high,

The weakness of our flesh supply.

Drive far from us the foe we dread,

And grant us thy true peace instead;

So shall we not with thee for guide

Turn from the path of life aside.

O may thy grace on us bestow

The Father and the Son to know

And thee thro' endless times confess'd

Of both the eternal Spirit blest.

All glory while the ages run,

Be to the Father and the Son,

Who rose from death; the same to thee,

O Holy Spirit eternally. Amen.

Let us pray:

Spirit of the Living God,

enter our soul and make our hearts ready.

By your light illumine the darkness of our minds,

by your fire warm our cold hearts,

by your grace fill us with your power.

May we see what is right,

do what is good,

persevere in what is holy

and live in your love, your peace and your joy. Amen.

PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT 4

Come Holy Spirit, live in us

With God the Father and the Son,

And grant us your abundant grace

To sanctify and make us one.

May mind and tongue made strong in love,

Your praise throughout the world proclaim,

And may that love within our hearts

Set fire to others with its flame.

Most blessed Trinity of love,

For whom the heart of man was made,

To you be praise in timeless song,

And everlasting homage paid.

Let us pray:

Father, may the spirit who dwells in our hearts

be the voice of our prayer.

May he guide us in our colloquy with you

to discover the riches of your love

and transform our lives with his grace.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT 5

Let us place ourselves in the presence of God,

ask pardon for our sins

and the grace to make this meditation well.

My God,

prostrate in your presence,

I adore you and I love you as my creator,

my redeemer and my sovereign good.

I am sorry with all my heart for having offended you;

give me the grace to understand well

the truths on which I am about to meditate,

and enkindle my heart with love of you.

Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus, my guardian angel,

Saint John Bosco, and all you saints of heaven,

pray for me.

PRAYERS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT 6

Come, O Spirit from on high!

Shine upon our inward eye,

Pierce the blindness of our sight!

Come, O kinsman to our aid;

Come with gifts that never fade;

Come and bathe us in thy light!

Come, O Consoler Spirit blest,

Troubled souls' most welcome guest

Soothing hand on fevered brow!

Restful ease in toil and stress,

Cooling wind when heats oppress.

Comfort in all grief art thou!

Light of lights in darkness shine,

Flood our hearts with light divine,

Burn within us living fire!

If thou dost not light our way,

Ever from thee must we stray;

Sinful men with grace inspire!

What is stained by sin renew;

What is dry with grace bedew;

Strength to wounded souls restore!

Coldness with thy ardour burn;

Wilfulness to wisdom turn;

Crooked ways make straight once more

To thy people come in love;

All our hope is from above;

With thy sevenfold grace descend!

Come with virtues' high reward;

Come in death as living Lord;

Come with joy that knows no end. Amen.

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit,

That my thoughts may all be holy.

Act in me, O Holy Spirit,

Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit,

That I always may be holy.

To guide our thoughts towards the truth.

And to help us by our words

To communicate life, joy and love.

PRAYER AFTER MEDITATION

Blessed are those who listen to God's Word and live by it day after day.

Let us renew our consecration to God

and our dedication to our mission on behalf of youth;

let us ask our Lady for the gift of fidelity.

Most Holy

and Immaculate Virgin, Help of Christians,

Mother of the Church,

foundress and support of our Congregation,

we place ourselves under your motherly protection,

and faithful to our Salesian vocation,

we promise to work always

for the greater glory of God

and for the salvation of souls.

With Trust

In your intercession,

we pray for the Church,

for our Congregation and the Salesian Family,

for the young, especially those most in need,

and for all redeemed by Christ.

You Were

Don Bosco's teacher;

show us how to imitate his virtues,

especially his union with God,

his purity, humility and poverty,

his love for work and for temperance,

his kindness

and his whole-hearted service of others,

his loyalty to the Pope

and to the Bishops of the Church.

Grant, O Mary

Help of Christians,

that we may serve God

with fidelity and generosity until death.

Help Us

to come at last to the endless joy of life together in our Father's home in heaven. Amen.

Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us.

NIGHT PRAYER

Before we take our repose let us thank God

for the graces we have received today.

Let us ask pardon for our negligences and offer him

the good that we have accomplished.

(Examination of conscience)

In the name of the Father and of the Son

and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

I adore you, O my God, and I love you with all my heart. I thank you for having created me,

called me into your church

and preserved me during the day past.

Pardon me for having offended you,

and deign to accept any good

I may have done this day.

Watch over me during my repose

and free me from all dangers.

May your grace be always with me

and with all those who are dear to me. Amen.

O my God,

I am sorry and beg pardon for all my sins, and detest them above all things,

because they deserve your dreadful punishments because they have crucified my loving Saviour, Jesus Christ, and, most of all,

because they have offended your infinite goodness;

and I firmly resolve,

by the help of your grace,

never to offend you again,

and carefully to avoid the occasions of sin.

Sweet Jesus, have mercy on me

and pardon me.

Our Father who art in heaven...

Dear Mother Mary, ever a virgin, help me to save my soul.

Hail Mary...

Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

I give you my heart and my soul.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

assist me in my last agony.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

may I breathe forth my soul in peace with you.

Let us pray for the Pope and for our bishop:

May the Lord assist them and protect them in guiding the people of God.

For our superiors and missionaries:

May the Lord bless their work and recompense their labours.

For our parents, benefactors and persons recommended to our prayers:

May the Lord reward with eternal life those who do good to us.

For the Co-operators and past pupils:

May God preserve them in his grace, faithful to the teachings of Don Bosco.

For the faithful departed:

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

For our community:

May the Lord preserve us in love and peace after the example of the Holy Family.

O God,

you gave your priest,

Saint John Bosco,

to the Church to be the father

and teacher of the young

Kindle in our hearts

the love that burned in his,

so that we may serve you alone

and seek the salvation of our fellowmen.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Mary Help of Christians

Pray for us.

In the name of the Father...
